What makes a learning moment stay with you?

Connect a new skill to a real task and build a small practice you can return to.
FROM UNDERSTANDING TO USE

Give the learning somewhere to go.

A demonstration can make a process look straightforward. Following the same steps later, with your own project open, can feel quite different. You may remember the command but not the choice that came before it, or recognize the result without being certain how to reach it.

That is a useful place to begin. Instead of trying to remember everything from a session, choose one task you want to be able to repeat. What are you starting with? What should be different when you finish? Which part still needs an explanation?

The goal is not to recreate every click from memory. It is to understand enough of the task to recognize the next step and know when to ask a question.

01 / CONNECT IT TO THE WORK

Begin with a task you recognize.

Choose a small example from the kind of work you actually do. Work in a practice file or a copy rather than a live deliverable. Give yourself a clear starting point and one result to aim for.

As you work, notice the decisions as well as the actions. Why did you choose that setting? What tells you that the result is right? What would you check if it looked different?

A short note about those decisions can be more useful than a long list of commands. Write enough to help your future self understand the process, including the point where you became uncertain.

“Give a new skill a task to belong to.”

02 / TRY IT AGAIN

Repeat one small piece.

Return to the same task and try it with a slightly different example. Keep your notes nearby, but pause before looking at them. See which parts you can explain and which still feel like following instructions.

At the end, write three short lines: what you tried, what became clearer, and what you want to ask next. Those notes give your next practice session a starting point.

Learning does not have to end with a perfect performance. A clearer question and a task you are willing to try again are useful things to take away.
